| County Cork | Pre-Christian Ruins Posted: Tue June 17, 2008 12:59 AM UTC
Hello-I will be staying in Knocklong, Limerick, which will be our base and travelling by day trips by car to the west coast, Dingle Peninsula,
Ring of kerry, southern coast - Cobh, and one day in Dublin by train. Where are the best ruins to see? I think it may be too far to go to the Hills of Tara and other locations in Meath and Louth, althought that sounds like the prime really old historic areas. We are just taking a train into Dublin for the day, and trying to cut costs, so we don't really want to stay over---but, I don't want to miss whatever is really spectacular. We are flying into Shannon 6/21. Thanks. |

You might like to fit in a visit/tour to Newgrange whilst you are in Dublin:
http://www.newgrange.com/ Have a look at these pages for info on prehistoric sites around Limerick etc: http://www.megalithomania.com/ is a general list, including by county. Also: http://www.lookaroundireland.com/mapoflimerick.htm http://www.anima.demon.co.uk/ireland.html http://goireland.about.com/od/specialinterestholid There are hundreds (thousands?) of prehistoric sites all over Ireland. Some are very obvious and spectacular, others barely visible. Accessible sites will (generally) be signed from the road (though not always in English). I suggest you also ask the Tourist Information people in Limerick for local info whilst you are there.

Definitely go see Newgrange--you will love it!. Also, I really enjoyed the Irish National Museum in Dublin and its collection of pre-Christian treasures.
