Maui Update on Maui transportation options / high gas prices
Posted: Tue June 17, 2008 12:48 AM UTC
Here is a recent article about the Maui bus system that sheds some light; month pass is $25. From March 2008 - Maui News

"WAILUKU — County Transportation Director Don Medeiros hopes to receive funding next fiscal year for another bus for Upcountry, funding for a lobbyist in Washington, D.C., and funding for bus stop and bus shelter designs for his ever-growing bus program.
He said on Friday that the county’s Maui Bus program operated by Roberts Hawaii has grown rapidly and continues to expand.
“Overall, the ridership is going through the roof,” he said.
By February ridership was more than 900,000 people, compared to 800,000 for the entire last fiscal year, he said.
Medeiros said he expects ridership to reach 1.3 million by the end of this fiscal year, a 55 percent increase from last fiscal year.
“The ridership that has really grown by leaps and bounds is the Wailuku and Kahului area,” he added.
But also growing is Kihei and Lahaina, as well as the county’s commuter route that services Haiku, Upcountry, Kihei and Central Maui areas to the south and west sides.
“With gas prices going the way they are going, more people are looking at options to get to work,” he said.
A monthly bus pass costs only $25, but one cannot buy a tank of gas for only $20, Medeiros added. "

As of June 2008 - close to $4.60- $4.80 per gallon most places on Maui. Some more remote regions, like Hana with only one gas station, expect $5.00 or more per gallon.
