Vermont 2 week holiday in New England
Posted: Mon June 16, 2008 10:39 PM UTC
Hi all

my girlfriend and I are going to spend 2 weeks in New England and we are trying to establish an itinerary that allow us to cover the main must-do's of North and Central Vermont, New Hampshire, Mid Coast Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and finishing in New York City. We know we would need months to cover properly all this area, that's why we are looking for information about what we should not miss from people living there or have been there. We are arriving from Montreal to Burlington by bus and we want to drive through the states finishing in NY City. Any tips on car rental around Burlington then will be really appreciated, too. We want to return the car near NY.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi ,
So when are you going ?? Well I grew up in N.H. and then lived in R.I. for 30 yrs..so this is what I would recommend . Burlington is a neat city so you might want to spend a night . Not sure about a car rental there...but driving thru Vt is beautiful and if you like ice cream check out Ben and Gerry's ..Think it's in Waterbury??? Then drive down to N.H and check out the White Mt area . If you want to take a scenic drive check out The Kangamamgus Highway. There is one spot there that you can swim in the river..or rapids. Not sure but I think it's called Sabaday Falls??? It's been a few yrs since I have been there.. N.H is also known for it's lakes . ... the largest is Winnippissakee but some sites on the lake are tourists traps.. like Weirs Beach ..unless you want to take a tour of the lake on the historic boat The Mt Washington . Nice way to see the lake ..which actually has 360 islands . As for Mass. I would spend a night or 2 in Boston. Cape Cod has great beaches but the traffic is be a killer...Boston can be a tad $$$ but there is alot to see and do there especially if you are into history . Great food too.. Go to Durgin Park for a typical New England style dinner They have good fish ...try the scrod and the prices are not too $$$ If you really want a Boston experince and you are going soon get tickets to a Red Sox game which is at Fenway .If your girl friend likes to shop go to Filene's Basement .. You could also go to the North End of Boston and have fantastic Italian food .. Do think Boston is an incredible city .
Now for R.I. ... well Providence is ok .. but I would not stay there .. New port is nicer and you would have lots to see there . If you spend the night and have time do The Cliff Walk . You might even want to tour one of the Mansions . Then on the drive to NYC you go by Mystic Seaport ...stop there for a few hrs ..Oh guess I forgot all about Maine .. the seacoast is great ..maybe you could shoot across N.H. from Vt .. Have a lobster dinner for me while you are there .. Booth Bay is good ..
Yikes .. think I miss New England ..Might need to go home.
Have a great trip .
Maureen
