| Melbourne | Hostels Posted: Mon June 16, 2008 04:04 PM UTC
Hi all, just looking for some info, there are 3 of us flying into Melbourne on d 2nd of Sept and we are looking for a good central hostel to stay in for the first few days to get us on our feet, also looking for a hostel with a double room and was wondering would we need to book in advance? We plan on staying in Melbourne for 3 months and will be looking for jobs, are there any problems getting jobs, at d moment we wrk at clerical, carpentary and fitness instructor but we are open to anything within reason, just wondering is there any problems renting accomadation is there a big deposit required etc?

I can recommend The Nunnery - good location, nice atmosphere. It has a tram stop almost outside the front door and a park just across the road. Free breakfast.

Hi
My son stayed at http://www.friendlygroup.com.au/greenhouse_home.asp. Excellent central location. Its roof terrace is a big feature. Double rooms (shared facilities) are AUD$78 per night.

I assume that you have work permits, clerical work might be tricky but there are agencies you can join that send people where staff are needed. The other 2 jobs I think will be easier especially the carpenter as there is always a lot happening in the building industry.
The bond required when renting is roughly 4 weeks rent which is returned to you if no damage etc when you leave.

Above suggestions above are great for short term stays, however for the longer stays you'd probably want something on weekly rental. Melb is VERY tight as far as rental properties are concerned and getting quite expensive. 2 bedroom unit in the suburbs is $250 ++ per week (unfurnished).

to find accomodation, i recommend jumping on the gumtree website or www.share-accommodation.com.au
It might be very difficult to find such short term accomodation as there is a huge shortage at the moment, and people prefer people who are willing to stay longer than 6 months. In regards to getting work, Building wouldnt be a problem at all, if you have work permits, there are plenty of temp agencies that can help you. Fitness instructors, well there are plenty of gyms in melbourne, but that would come down to them being willing to employ someone for such a short period of time.
