| Provincie Zeeland | Transport from Amsterdam to Zeeland for group of 40 people Posted: Mon June 16, 2008 10:53 AM UTC
Hello,
I am planning trip for about 40 people to Amsterdam. We are considering to do a half day trip to Zeeland to see the Delta works. However, since our time is short, I'm wondering if there are any boats that do the same route. (On a boat it would be easier to use the time during travel for something social.) Renting a boat for our group only is also an option if anyone know of such opportunities. Any tips regarding guided tours or lectures on the delta works are also welcome. - Espen - Norway |

To get from Amsterdam to the Delta works a boat would need half a day. There are no scheduled boats doing this. Best option would be to charter a coach, but count on two hours or more to get there.

Some tips:
http://www.deltawerken.com/ I've never been in this attraction park before, but it might be nice if there are kids in the group: http://www.neeltjejans.nl/ It takes about 4 hours from Amsterdam central station to this park by public transport (about 40 euros per person for a return ticket) according to http://www.9292ov.nl/. It can hardly be done in half a day on a return trip, even with a bus.
Leaving Amsterdam at 6AM to visit for instance the Neeltje Jans works etc for just 1 hour and than be back at Amsterdam at 1PM (is that what you want?).\ More info at: http://members.virtualtourist.com/vt/ks/?s=neeltje PJ

I have a different option, as I live in the 'Deltaworks' area. As others said, a half day is too little time. But you could do this: visit the Maas river Storm Surge barrier at Hoek van Holland, which is very impressive.
The Maeslantkering is basically two arms, the size of the Eifel Tower each, that close in case of a storm surge and protects the land up to about 35 kms inland (Dordrecht). A very imposing sight. www.keringhuis.nl Choose the English option Then choose Visit the Barrier for visitors information. Entrance is free. There are group tours (1.5 hrs) in English available if you give prior notice. How to get there: Train from Amsterdam Central to Hoek van Holland Haven with one change at Schiedam Centrum (total trip: 92 minutes, return trip 27,40 euro). From there it's a 4 km walk along the river Maas, or take a taxi. All in all the total travel time should be about 4 hours plus a 1.5 hour visit, which is just over half a day. If you like, see my Rozenburg page. I have taken photos from the other side of the water (from the Rozenburg peninsula).

For your information: Hoek van Holland is in the province Zuid-Holland, on the coast, just south of The Hague (or west of Rotterdam, if you will). Not by far as far as province Zeeland.
The actual Deltaworks in the province Zeeland you can only enjoy by bike or car/bus. There is no train along that route (the N57).
