Why are you traveling to Mexico, and Guadalajara - without first having these questions answered?

Morenita,

What kinds of things do you want to do during your visit to Guadalajara? Do you want to stay in the city or in one of the outlying areas?

When are you planning to visit? How long will you stay in Guadalajara?

These are just a few questions you need to think about before making the trip.

My husband and I have been through Guadalajara on the bus but have not yet explored the city...something we would like to do in the future. There is so much to see and do.

We have visited Tlaquepaque briefly and would like to go back to spend some time looking around. We visited Tonalá for a couple of days and loved it! Both towns are part of Guadalajara, but are separate entities. Both have many, many artisan workshops and shops where you can watch the artisans at work and buy many types of products.

South of the city is Lake Chapala, which has attracted a large number of foreigners to the area, mainly to Chapala and Ajijic. We visited Ajijic for an afternoon and thought it was a charming little town. There were a number of galleries and shops selling various handicrafts and art as well as a lovely park in the center.

I would suggest looking at some web sites about Guadalajara and finding out all the city has to offer. Then, you can decide what you want to see and do and choose a hotel accordingly.

The hotel where we stayed in Tonalá had a sign listing various taxi fares around the city. Because the city is so large, it can be expensive to travel from place to place. It might be a good idea to use the city buses instead.

You don't need more than a couple of days in Guadalajara.

Fly into Guadalajara. It has an airport.

When my family came to visit they stayed at Hotel Morales in the historic center. It was very nice and I am going to stay there again at the end of the month.

There are some things to see and do in Guadalajara, but not many. You can see my recommended activities and sights here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/7830d/e7e5f/ There are also restaurant suggestions at that page.

I've done a self-guided trip to Tequila and I've also ridden the Tequila Express. I would recommend the train, although it's expensive (about $100 US per person) and only runs on weekends. It's a full day trip.

I found Chapala/Ajijic insanely boring, even just as a day trip. Blah.
