Washington D.C. Is Tyson Corner too far if using public transport?
Posted: Mon June 16, 2008 12:40 AM UTC
I've receive a very good offer from Marriott Tyson Corner. We'll be using public transport and nearest metro station Dunn Loring is 3 miles from property. They have limited shuttle service to the station, but I'm travelling wlth wife (46) and daughter (17). Is it safe, risky, not worth it or should I consider it? The hotel offer: $ 74.00 (AAA), $ 99.00 without, 3 1/2 stars, big breakfast, great reviews on Trip Advisor, wonderfull property. Only concern: transport. First timer on DC. Will appreciate all replies! Thanks.

Is your goal to visit the city of Washington as a tourist? If so, and if the hotel's shuttle is really limited, then I'd recommend not staying at this hotel. It is a good half-hour ride on Metro from West Falls Church (probably the metro station they'd take you to) to downtown DC. Add the shuttle time, and waiting time, and you are talking about almost an hour each way. Is taking two hours out of every day of your stay worth the savings you'd get at this hotel? For me, it wouldn't be.

Dear Travelmad:

Thanks for your reply! Sad beacuse it seemed like a nice property. I talked to the hotel concierge and the $ 74.00 (AAA) offer does not include the breakfast for 2. The $ 99.00 includes 2 breakfast and additionals (2) are $ 16.00 each, and believe me, I need them! Now, Hotwire is offering a 3 stars in Arlington for $ 89.00 and a 3 stars also in Dupont Circle for $ 129.00. Both have pools to beat the heat in any certain moment and much closer, not to say there, as the one in Tyson. I'll keep you posted in the family's decision in which your comments will be take much in account. Thanks VT Member! (By the way: which would you pick?)

If the Arlington place is within walking distance of the Metro, then I would say go for it. Dupont Circle is quite central, but Arlington is almost as close, by Metro, to the Mall and monuments. Either would be fine, so you may as well pick the cheaper one. (If the Arlington place requires a bus to get to the Metro, though, I would go with Dupont Circle.)

There are great restaurants in Arlington, so you could easily spend evenings there.

Dear Julie: Your advice was extremely helpful! Searching washinton.org (spread the word!) we found the "Staying Power" Promotion. Marriott Key Bridge was booked last Tuesday June 17, 2008 (kind of last minute) for $ 71.00. It was as close to the center as we could get since hotels seem to be filling up fast for these dates. Reviews on the property were fair to excellent. After my stay I will rate it on VT for others to view. The forum was a great tool for this important aspect of our trip. So. DC, here we go!

Great! Key Bridge is very close, so you'll have an easy trip into town. Have a great time and stay cool--DC is pretty swampy!
