| Munich | making the most ofour time Posted: Sun June 15, 2008 05:06 AM UTC
Hello
WIll be in Munich for 3 days before heading to Austria. Just wondering what are definate 'must sees' on our trip. My fiance and I are in our late 20s so will probably check out the beer halls, but I read somewhere that you could get a train to the alps - Lenggries. How long would this take to get to from Munich city centre and any other suggestions for munich would be great thank you |

The train journey from Munich to Lenggries takes just over an hour, so is entirely feasible for a day trip.

Hi - I'd reccomend the Residenz, Schloss Nymphenburg, Deutsches Museum, walking around Marienplatz with visits to St Michael's Church and Church of Our Lady, and if you have another day for a trip out of town, Neuschwanstein. Happy Travels!

The train to Lenggries is operated by a private rail service called BOB (Bayerische Oberlandbahn). Make sure you have a validated ticket before you enter the train. Tickets can be purchased at the "Reisezentrum" at Munich Central Station or ticket vending machines. Please note that only the middle section of the train actually goes to Lenggries. Lenggries should be displayed above the door.
Alternatively, you could take the train to Lenggries but visit Bad Tölz instead. While Lenggries is a bit closer to the Alps, Bad Tölz is the more beautiful town. In Bad Tölz, go down Marktstraße (http://www.bad-toelz.de/dasat/images/0/103390-dsc01205.jpg), climb up Kalvarienberg (http://www.bad-toelz.de/dasat/images/9/103379-dsc01168.jpg) on the right hand side of Marktstraße, and then go alongside river Isar.

Beer gardens should be visited and although they serve also food one is welcome to bring his own food but one have to buy the beer from the place.
A quick must see tour of 2 hrs can also be taken by the open tourist buses situated behind the main train station Munich Banhof and cost about €20 Enjoy

I agree with the Deutschesmuseum, a great Museum near the river Isar. The train to the alps is also fun, I like Garmisch-Partenkirchen, there are frequent trains that take about 1 1/2 hours, very pretty scenery. But you could possibly go via this town on your way to Austria as there are trains to Innsbruck from GP. There are day trips to the Castles or you can make your own way there, Neuschwanstein is great. Also Schloss Nymphenburg is good, you can catch a tram there as it is right in Munich.

Oh, I forgot about GP! If you go that way, make sure to go to Zugspitze!
