One day in Johannesburg Posted: Sat June 14, 2008 11:35 PM UTC
Hi again,
I will spend one day in Johannesburg before venturing off on a volunteer project in SA. Where is a nice place to stay that isn't expensive? Also,
what's the best way to spend my one day in Johannesburg?
As always...thanks for any advice.

Hi, what time are you arriving and what time departing? Is it one night or two nights you are in Jhb? Best bet is probably a guest house/B&B. Usually they will also arrange airport transfer for you and can arrange for your day outings. It depends what you want to see/do? Plenty of options including, shopping, Africa Museum, Appartheid Museum, art galeries etc etc. All depends on your interests. Give us some more info and we can guide you in the right direction. One nice place to stay is Aluvi House in Pretoria (ca 50 km from the airport) See their web site www.aluvi.co.za

Thanks. I'll be there on a Saturday night and all day on Sunday in October.
I'd like to see as much as I can on foot. I'm not really 'in to' tour buses or organized tours. Museums are good but mostly I just want to walk around and experience Johannesburg.

Wouldn't call Johannesburg a walkable city. For a start, it is about 20 miles by 20 miles in area with pockets of very diverse culture. If you want to experience the much publicised crime of Johannesburg, we could certainly "recommend" Hillbrow, Joubert Park, but then you would have to finish your walking before sunrise Sunday because then they sleep off their hangovers.
Rosebank has a good market on Sundays, if you are into that type of thing. For the rest, Johannesburg is decidely sleepy on Sunday mornings compared to other days of the week.

The market sounds good. Maybe I'll spend the remainder of the day resting instead of walking. Would it be better to stay closer to or in Pretoria?

Usually by 2 pm most of the stores in the malls are closed already on sundays. Eastgate and East Rand malls have some stores which closes later than 2 pm though not later than 4pm. Most of the restaurants and fastfood joints though will still be open .
City, Town and Road lodge hotels have branches near the airport and thier rates are reasonable. check their page: http://www.citylodge.co.za/.

Zoo Lake is an interesting place to take a walk and observe the very diverse cultures that exist in the city.
