Is it easy (and safe) for a single (female) traveler to take a bus from Johannesburg to Tzaneen?

It is fine but my suggestion would be to drive yourself, depending on time available etc.

Yes to both your questions. SA has a well developed intercity bus network and these are of good quality and safe for you to travel on. However, you need to be careful at the bus stations at either end. Preferably I would catch a bus from Pretoria station rather that Jhb Stn. This has nothing to do with your being female. Also be extra careful about traveling at night. Make sure that you are being met at your destination.
Check out www.greyhound.co.za or www.intercity.co.za or www.saroadlink.co.za.
Have an amazing trip and experience.

My mother-in-law did that trip by bus every year until she turned 75 three years ago.

Bus service to most cities in SA is ok. The problem is much more on how to get to and from the central bus station in Park station safely.Once your within the terminal area, its relatively safe, but its visitors parking area needs maximum awareness for safety.

I usually take the Rissik st. parking area and entrance where there are less people hanging around. The ground area entrance and parking area is too busy, and a group could easily gang up on you without being noticeable and get what they want in a matter of seconds. Thats what one of our visitor experienced a while back. Good thing he was not carrying anything valuable with him. I sually ask my visitors who needs to be picked up in the park station to stay within terminal area and wait for me to find them within.
