| Cadiz | Spending a week in Cadiz solo Posted: Wed June 11, 2008 07:10 PM UTC
Hi wild travellers!
I'm going to stay in Cadiz for a week in the middle of August 2008.I'll be attending Spainish lessons in the mornings but afterwards i'll have the rest of the day for myself. Since, i'm travelling solo what would you recommend me i could do?Is it safe for women, especially at night? |

It may be worth sending an e mail to some of the previous posters on the Cadiz forum. Do you drink Sherry? :-)

Cadiz is safe at night. Go to the beach in the afternoons, it's got a few nice beaches. Visit the San Sebastian fort along the waterfront or go to the Roman theatre its in great shape.

Hey there, I may also be travelling solo near the area around the same time as you... maybe we could meetup? I´ve been to Cadíz once before, only by day, but it felt like a secure kind of town - nothing that made me cautious. Also the beaches are beautiful, there´s a great gold-capped Cathedral near the beach and Cadíz claims to have been the first inventor of fried fish shops (i.e. before the English traditional fish and chips).... so it may be worth looking out for a fried fish shop (which has a much lighter batter than the English variety).
Happy travels - enjoy your course and send me a message if you want a meetup at some point. m.x

Apart from the beach, eating tapas and a stroll round the labyrinth of the old town - there ain't much to do in Cadiz...it's pretty hot in august, so you probably wont be up for doing too much anyway. Go to the market just off Plaza Flores, be careful when you buy anything though - they will, sin duda, try and do you out of a euro per purchase (if your a guiri they assume your fair game). Buy in full or part kilos so you can work out the price in your head (they display the price in kilos). It will be a good practical Spanish language lesson for you...also remember the Gaditanians cut the end of their words, so you may find it difficult to understand what their saying. i live here 'n speak to them in this accent when conducting 'market transactions'.
There is a very small but beautiful park accross from the language dept of the Uni - its called Genove... Do you know there's another interesting wee walk...take the right turning into Pointe San Felipe and head for Port America. the view of the city from here is pretty and the industrial part of the city is screaming for a bit of black n white photography action. Cadiz is safe...just watch out for the zooming motorbikes. Be sensible. Folk are fairly poor here - it's an economic blackspot - so of course there are opportunists, but not bad violent folk - they save that for their wives (controversial or what!!!!). Enjoy! Carmelle

Muchas Gracias Carmelle!:-)
I expected it to be hot during August, but what can i do?(you know how it is when it comes to work's obligations,so...) But no matter what i'll try to get as much as i can out of Cadiz (especially if you take into consideration that i'm well-trained to 40 degrees on a routine basis as i live in Athens:-)). I'll have your tips in mind and definitely try to "survive" in the Market! te deseo un verano maravilloso! hasta luego, Vasia

excellent stuff!!
i went to the beach in Cadiz during a weekend trip to Sevilla a couple of weeks ago... it´s looking busy, but i´ve been given a couple of hints of nice beaches to checkout. i reckon i´ll be back there at least for a day within the next fortnight, so let me know as soon as you have dates confirmed and i´ll see if i can make it the same time as you :)

I'd strongly recommend a daytrip to Vejer de la Frontera. It's a nice white village not far from Cŕdiz. Thee are daily direct buses from Cŕdiz to that village.
