Can anyone recommend a hotel in downtown Las Vegas. We would prefer a pool. Are there any advantages to staying downtown. We have stayed on the strip and thought we would try something different. Thanks

Downtown is very old looking but it's a cool, place to hang out. Lots of street bands and live shows. It's a nice place to walk around and people watch there are a lot of strange people to look at(homeless, drunks, and druggies). I was at the Golden Nugget and there pool has a huge aquarium in the background and you can play black in the pool. In my opinion it's the nicest Casino on Fremont Street. There food is really good too!The Golden Nugget's pool is in doors and depending upon the time of year your coming that could be an advantage. It's 104 degrees here now! I could swim outside because the sun isn't out, but during the day forget it.
I live here, so I prefere the local places like Green Valley, or Red Rock. You may consider staying off the strip...

I wouldn't stay in downtown, it's a waste of money and a vacation.
An alternative to staying on the strip would be staying at the Loews Lake Las Vegas. I really enjoyed my stay here! It's a beautiful hotel and location. Rates were around $90, we stayed on a weekday, so I'm not sure how much the weekends are.

I agree Lake Las Vegas is the best place to stay. Not many people know about that little Gem!

If you’ve already been to Vegas and stayed on the Strip then Downtown is certainly worth thinking about. I’ve stayed on Fremont St three times and enjoy the fact that everything is closer together so casino hopping is much easier, you’ve also got the great atmosphere and lightshow in the evenings. Another plus is that the Downtown Transportation Centre is just a short walk away where you can catch a bus to anywhere around Vegas and do some exploring. If you are looking for a pool then I‘d suggest the Golden Nugget. If the Defending the Caveman comedy show is still on I’d recommend it and there is a cheap ticket booth at the Four Queens. If you are looking for good beer try the 777 Microbrewery at Main St Station where the food is also good or there is a small Chicago Brewing outlet in the Four Queens. For breakfast I’d recommend Hennessey’s up near the Neonopolis end of Fremont St.
Enjoy the trip. Clive

I'm not sure what's with a couple of the posters saying downtown is a waste, they are dead wrong!
Downtown is much better than the strip. More laid back, but it still has good action. The strip is expensive, and too much like Disney Land. Downtown is set up for walking and everything is close. If your looking for a good pool, I agree with the 2 posters about the Golden Nugget. Binions also has a pool on the roof of the tower, and is more affordable. Good luck Marc

GOLDEN NUGGET!
It is the crown jewel of downtown. I am a veteran Vegas goer. I have stayed at The Plaza several times & El Cortez several times. I won't stay at either again. All remodeled but clientele at El Co & Plaza seemed to have gone downhill along witth the helpfulness of staffs. Golden Nugget has a newly remodeled pool & rooms, etc. Very nice. Good deals too. I was originally going to stay at any # of other places on this upcoming trip. You can shuttle or cab to strip when you want.
