Vienna 6 hours to kill with luggage
Posted: Tue June 10, 2008 08:50 PM UTC
Hi everyone. I'll be traveling to Vienna in a couple of days. On my last day, my hotel check out is either at 11am or noon, and I don't have to catch my reserved train until about 6pm.

Any suggestion on what me and my husband could do for that amount of time with all of our luggage with us? Are there any nice parks or anything that we could just sit and relax in for a while?

Thanks!

here's a link to 'the ten best parks in Vienna'. http://www.10best.com/Vienna/Sights_&_Activities/Parks/index.html

I recommend Schonbrunn, but it has been quite a while since I've been in Vienna. You could combine the park with the zoo, that is next to it. http://www.zoovienna.at/

Have you considered the possibility of leaving the luggage in storage, either at the train station or in the hotel you leave that day?

Ask the hotel to store your luggage till late afternoon and pick it up on the way to the train station. I've never come across a hotel that wouldn't do this. Either they'll have a locked storage room or keep it at the reception.

I see there is already a suggestion of leaving your luggage at the hotel. I think it's key to find out what places you have in your list to visit while in Vienna. If there's a place you missed, or want to spend any more time in and this place is not too inconvenient - then visit that extra place.

Othewise I have evil thoughts of sitting in a coffee house and having some delicious confections ...

I would be most surprised if your hotel would not have provision for you to leave your luggage till train time. I see that you are still young enough to enjoy a bit of fun, so if you are satisfied that you have done all the must sees in Vienna (and there are heaps of them) why not think about whiling away a few hours at the Prater? I'm in my late fifties and I enjoyed it immensely, mind you I didn't go on any of the rides, but my 25year old son did and had a whale of a time. Just a thought!

The hotel will surely have where to leave your luggage .. i would suggest that you do the check out even earlier that is after breakfast so you will have a full day in Vienna !! Have a nice trip :)

Well we're in Vienna now. We're in a pretty cheap hotel, and they don't have much of a reception area at all. The side part is open and pretty much anyone could go back there if it was unattended, which it was during breakfast, so I'm going to check out the train station and see if there are any decent lockers. Or just drag them around with me! :)

Nope! Lol. Well, we each only have one medium suitcase, so it's not bad. We're just going to go sit in a square or something and wait and relax. We don't feel too comfortable leaving them somewhere unattended for that long.

Whatever you do, do not leave your luggage unattended at all! I suggest you check out the possibilities of leaving the luggage in lockers at the train station. Otherwise, hanging out in coffee places is a great way of killing time, this is exactly what the locals do, and if you chose the right place, you get to experience the real coffee house culture which you will only find in Vienna. In case you don't read German, make sure you bring your own newspapers/magazines/books. The best coffee houses are (and you can sit there for hours without ordering much at all):
Cafe Eiles, Josefstädter Straße (near Parlament), 1080 Vienna
Cafe Jelinek (a rare gem), Otto Bauer Gasse 6, 1060 Vienna
Cafe Sperl, Gumpendorfer Straße, 1060 Vienna
Cafe Hummel, Josefstädter Straße 66, 1080 Vienna
Cafe Prückel, Stubenring/Wollzeile, 1010 Vienna
