We stayed in the Hotel Batory and were very happy with our choice. Prices start at 65 Euro, but you can ask for specials.

Look at www.venere.com and www.booking.com and www.staypoland.com
Also look at the official tourist info site on http://www.krakow.pl/en/ You can book accommodation online through them as well. You should be able to find something within your price range on those sites. You could also check out http://www.easyjethotels.net/home/homepage.jsp They often have very good deals (I have used them and it's been fine), and you don't have to fly with them. You do, however, have to pay the full amount when booking though (again, check hotel reviews before you make your choise).

Excellent response from leics re: hotel bookings. I'll check out these sites myself. I plan to return to glorious Krakow next June.

thanks for the lead. I ck'd their web page. Looks beautiful. Still shopping for price and hoping to be near Cloth Market...such as the University Hotel. Angel has a studio apartment which sleeps 2 for 250PLN per night or $104 USD if you stay 2 - 5 nights. It has become far more expensive to visit Poland in the past several years. Adding the cost of our flights to the tab makes things pretty expensive.

I am quite surprised that you had problems with finding the accommodation in Krakow for 60 EUR. I am sure there are many nice, cosy hotels for quite reasonable price. Just like Leics advised, maybe it is good to have a look at some booking websites to compare the hotels, their location and rates.
Have a look at www.everydaykrakow.com or www.staypoland.com - you will surely find some (they most of the time sell it cheaper than the hotel itself). A good choice are surely (nearby the Old Market Square) Wielopole, Alexander, Ascot or Europejski (quite interesting old style). But Kazimierz district is a goodchoice too - check David, Eden or Kazimierz. Good luck and have a nice stay!

thanks for the suggestions. I find that w/ prices rising so dramatically, I have to do more research to find the place that will work the best for my friend and I. I've stayed at the University Hotel and also stayed in a place several blocks from the square. I like the experience of being "involved" in the community around Cloth market. I'll check out all your suggestions.
