| Las Vegas | Going there with my parents Posted: Mon June 9, 2008 11:22 PM UTC
Hi, I'm going to Vegas by the end of July and wondering if there's any non-gambling activities anyone can suggest. My parents are no big fan of gambling and they won't spend more than 2 hours a day in the casino. We're planning to do some hotel-hopping for one day and want to something else that will get us away from the busy Strip live. Any suggestions?

Try the atomic energy musuem, just a short distance from the strip. Inside with AC is important.

It’s going to be hot! June and July I try to go to CA where it’s cool. I would recommend going to Mt.Charleston and having lunch at the lodge outside. It’s nice and cool up there and when you eat outside there are humming birds everywhere. It smells like pine trees and the breeze is nice and cool. It’s about a 35 minute drive from the strip. There are numerous hikes there too, but you should be in shape.
There are tons of malls here I like the Nike outlet stores everything is cheap. You could also drive to prim to shop. If you stay on the strip everything costs more then if you stay off the strip. I live near Green Valley and the South Point both very nice casinos. Stay away from the machines if you’re going to gamble try playing low limit poker. We have great movie theaters and bowling alleys.

Not sure what type of shape your parents are in - sometimes people like to walk around and just look thru the hotels ... however, not sure if you're used to Vegas in July, temperature can be in the 100's!

You might wish to take a look at the following wesite: www.a2zlasvegas.com. It has links for just about everything. As noted, the temps will be very high during your visit so you might wish to concentrate on indoor and evening activities. There is always a venture to the top of the Stratosphere, the Fremont Street area, and the shows. If you want to get out of the city, you could possibly make visits to Red Pock Canyon, Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. Gary

Not in order...
1. Fremont Street 2. Resort hopping 3. Resort pool 4. Cirque Du Soleil Shows or Le Reve 5. Stratosphere view and attractions 6. Grand Canyon or Hoover Dam 7. Shopping...lots of shopping 8. Free "shows" on the strip. TI and Belagio for example. 9. FOOD! The dinner buffet at the Wynn is amazing! I've been to Vegas around 10 times as of today and plan to go again in November and I'm not even 21 yet. Enjoy! MGM Grand The Wynn Ventian Mirage Mandalay Bay ...are some of my favorites to stay at. Great pools in each of them.

Allows you to shoot pistols, machine guns etc. Very cheap and well worth it. Also, check listings, some great concerts and sporting events to see

You could 'casino hop' for probably a week without actually gambling and still not see everything. I suggest getting a Deuce bus ticket $5 all day. Things are further apart than they look.
Also if you have time maybe do a tour to Hoover Dam (about an hour from the City) and if you have heaps of time do one to the Grand Canyon (more like 3 hours each way). We loved that part of our trip. As far as off the strip (but still in Las Vegas) activities go I have heard that the University is worth a look around but haven't actually done that myself. I hope you all have a great time. Don't spend too much money! ;-)

How old are your parents? How mobile? How heat-tolerant? If they are at all frail, you might run into problems going places, such as Hoover Dam, that require walking around outside. The Grand Canyon is a good suggestion as it's higher and usually cooler. The Liberace Museum is interesting, if you like gaudiness.
My husband wants to go to Vegas in August to see Cher. I've been there in summer before, and I'm going to make him book rooms somewhere with a really good pool complex, because in that heat I want to stay submerged.

If you're planning on seeing any shows, I wouldn't miss "Love". It's a great show if you're not a Beatle lover and fabulous if you are! I agree that casino hopping is also lots of fun. Plenty of shopping and tourist activities to keep you busy. Go up into the Eiffel Tower in the Paris, cruise the Grand Canal in the Venitian (also some great lunch spots). If you enjoy art, don't miss the Belaggio gallery. You can rent a car and visit the desert sights, such as Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire. A drive from Las Vegas to Valley of Fire is about 1 hour and you can return via Hoover Dam. This makes for a nice 1/2 to 1 day trip, depending on how long you want to spend in the Valley or at the Dam.
