Barcelona catalan or spanish courses???
Posted: Sat June 7, 2008 09:46 PM UTC
hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows of any free courses to learn catalan or spanish. I found a free catalan course but it is booked for the summer.

If you do not know of any free courses, would you be able to recommend something inexpensive? Everything Ive seen has been around 400 euros for about 2 weeks of teaching. I was hoping for something less as I am traveling on a budget but desperately want to learn! Catalan is my first choice because of family, even though Spanish is more universal...

I´ll take either course if there is one available!

Thank you in advance for the information!

First, it would important to know where you want to take those courses. Assuming it'll be in Barcelona these are the two most common alternatives:
1. summer courses at escuela oficial de idiomas
-homepage:
http://www.eoibd.cat/index.asp?idioma=3
- page for the spanish courses http://www.eoibd.cat/cursos_estiu/pages/center.asp?cat1=2&cat2=5&cat3=0&cat4=0
- page for the catalan courses
http://www.eoibd.cat/cursos_estiu/pages/center.asp?cat1=2&cat2=4&cat3=0&cat4=0

the courses begin june the 30th and finish july the 27th. and the price is 290.85 € (Tuition only, books not provided)

2. instituto cervantes (they only teach spanish here)
http://eee.cervantes.es/en/index.asp
ive had a fast look here and an intensive course of 20h (1 week) would cost 180€

Both institutions have centers in many different cities throughout the country.

You can also check for courses on webpages like emagister.com or other university-related websites. Also local government pages.

-the university of barcelona offers summer courses for non-catalan speakers. they are for free if you're a university student, but you have to pay otherwise. this is the site with prices
http://www.ub.edu/sl/es/fl/estiu/tsena.htm
- as for the local government here there is page with resources. it's written in catalán but hope you can get help from your relatives to translate it.
http://www20.gencat.cat/portal/site/Llengcat/menuitem.8c297de990e791e7a129d410b0c0e1a0/?
As a start, if you click on 'aprendre català' (learning català) on the left-side column, you'll get a listing of language resources: from self-teaching (autoaprenentatge) to language courses for adults

I hope this helps. Good luck! (Buena suerte/Bona sort) :)
