Question Posted By: Replies:
Have you ever googled your userid from VT?
Posted: Sat June 7, 2008 08:13 AM UTC
This was interesting. I googled "Bluecollar" (quotations included in search box) and came up with my VT pages on page two of Google's search results. But if I googled bluecollar (without quotations and no capital B), I went out to page 25 without seeing anything. I'm sure if I looked further down the list, I would have found something, but I got bored with it. After all, it is such a general term that this is really no surprise.

But it gets more interesting. When I google bluecollar traveler (without quotations and no capital B or T), my VT Hawai'i pages come up as the number one search result. I started referring to myself as "Bluecollar Traveler" sometime after setting up my initial VT account, however officialy on VT, I am only "Bluecollar".

And since I have used "bluecollartraveler" on many different online forums, I was surprised to see how many websites came up when I googled it.

So what results do you get when you google your VT userid? Do you use the same name elsewhere? Have you looked? Do you even care?

...I was just wondering.

No good googling me, because 'leics' is the short form of my county so there are zillions of results.

But 'leics travel' gets me at 9 and 10 on the first page.

And 'leics + name of country/city I've been to' gets me right at the top of the list.

Whoopee. Yes, I am bored.........

(But Daoism is interesting, innit? )

When I run a search on my username, it comes up with just under 400 results, all pointing back to my pages and posts elsewhere on VT. Not a huge surprise since I have a unique username (based on another word quite common) and Google spiders are quite fond of VT pages.

My username is based on Jokerit, a professional ice hockey team based in Finland (also a football club, now defunct).

Odd. There is a site, not sure if it's swedish, which apparently indexes back to VT as my name came up there with a VT link. Very strange.

My grown son was once doing a search and was surprised that the first item that came up was one of my VT pages. When he told me this I was surprised because I have ever had a "top five VT page". Earlier I had tried to encourage my son to check out my pages because of the family stories I had recorded in them. Once he saw the site he loved it, and he is not easily impressed.
