Province of Nova Scotia PLANNING A VACATION to Nova Scotia in JULY
Posted: Fri June 6, 2008 07:19 PM UTC
We are planning a family trip from Pennsylvania to Cape Breton in July. We have our accomodations as well as some Restaurants. In Halifax lunch at Cheelin dinner at Il Mercato; catching The Citidel, Maritime Museum, Titanic sites, Public Gardens (the next day should we drive down to Peggy's Cove if we are spending that evening in Isle Madame a few hours in the opposite direction)?? While in Cape Breton (for a week) we are planning a day in Baddeck (Amoeba Sail, Bell Museum lunch at Water's Edge); a day around the Highlands Park; a Celeidh in St. Anns? On return we have a night at the Pines Resort in Digby; Upper Clements Tix included in family plan (how cool!) and lunching at Brown Eyed Susans overlooking the gardens I hear. WHAT ELSE SHOULD WE DO BESIDES RELAX OUR HIGH ENERGY SUBURBAN PHILLY MOTORS??!!

You can do the Peggy's cover and then move in the other direction easy enough. Unless you fall in love with Peggy's cove and don't want to move on. Depending on the ages of your kids -- Theodore Tugboat is in Halifax Harbour. The Historic waterfron is really a treat. The Citadel is a wise choice. Please try to get over to Louisbourg while you're in Cape Breton. It's well worth it, expecially with kids. Oh, yes, The replica of the Schooner Bluenose is also usually docked in Halifax. On the other side of Halifax you will find Sherbrooke village, an historic village depicting life many years ago. If you're in the Digby area, you might want to go down to Brier Island for whale watching. You are going to be here at the right time for that (google Brier Island whale watching for info) Near Digby is Annapolis Royal, a beautiful little town for a day visit, complete with the Port Royal Habitation -- a recreation of the first French settlers fort in North America. Lots of really great little sandwich shops and neat little lunch spots in Annapolis Royal. If you have questions, please ask, I'll be glad to help

Your plans are really well rounded. I would agree with the last poster about theodore the tugboat if your kids are the right age to appreciate it, but even as adults, we enjoyed the cruise around the harbour.

Annapolis Royal is nice as well as the Tidal Hydro Electric dam, Fort Anne is also great.

There are some interesting spots along the valley between Digby and Halifax, Grand Pre is a great location to explore the expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia and is along the drive... There are wineries, but the quality is not quite Bordeaux yet LOL..

While in Cape Breton, you should look into the Cabot Trail. it is an amazing scenic drive that I would almost compare to the great Ocean road in Australia.

There are a few more spots to check out in Halifax, York Redoubt is also interesting. Also look into Louisburg.

You should also look into Mahone Bay when you travel to Peggy's Cove. It is a scenic little town on Saint Mary's Bay and it is also lovely. When in Peggys Cove, try to see the DeGarth Collection of paintings. It is in a local museum and he was a prolific and amazing local painter.

I hope that this helps and we are happy that you are coming to our province!

Thanks Babygrand and Tourtech. We will stop in Annapolis Royal for lunch at Brown-eyed Susans and Public Gardens. Planning to spend some time at Peggy's Cove. We will do Louisburg and the Cabot Trail drive as well. Thanks for your input. Kids are a little old for the Tugboat but we may check it out. Not old enough for the Louisburg Murder Mystery unfortunately as it falls on the evening we've planned for Louisburg.
