Resources:
Start reading www.ipanema.com for very good orientation information on sights, clubs, neighborhoods, etc. and print out a lot of info to take with you.
You will probably want to do the basics: see the Cristo and Sugarloaf, ride the bondinho in Santa Teresa, go for a ride or hike in Tijuca forest, hear live samba in Lapa, take a ferry ride across the bay.......
Also several guidebook companies put out guides for Rio only; see what your library or bookstore has available.
The Trip Advisor Brazil forum has a very active group of posters with knowledge about Rio.
Read all the posts here by rafaelthesecond, a knowledgable Rio guide, who haas some great off-the-beaten-path ideas.
You will probably also receive a big mess of difficult-to-use websites in Portuguese directly below this post.

Weather/beach weather:
Weather might be rainy and cool, probably too cool for the beach. Here's a site with averages:
http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/vacationplanner/vacationclimatology/monthly/BRXX0201?from=vac_top10_theme
You could also think about flying up to Natal in the northeast for better beach weather and a wider idea of Brazil. Look at flights on GOL. (www.voegol.com.br)

Language:
Learn as much Portuguese as you can before you go, since few people speak any English. Buy and carry at least a phrasebook, if not a dictionary.

Safety:
Read and follow all the safety advice on all the Brazil travel forums, but do not let them freak you out. You CAN and WILL have a great and safe trip.

Boa viagem/Happy travels.

Don't forget to visit: Praia do Grumari, Praia da Barra, Ipanema, Copacabana,
Corcovado, Pão de Açucar, Parque do Flamengo, Niteroi (Icarai), Samba City.

Don't be lazy. Get a ticket flight/bus to Cabo Frio while away your time.
Cabo Frio is a nice town near Rio de Janeiro. You will find many bus tickets at Rodoviaria Novo Rio from Rio to Cabo Frio into clerk Bus Company 1001 sites. Cabo Frio is much closer to Buzios as well. These towns are very nice sight-seeings.

-- Hi, if you have a chance ,go to Buzios ( two hrs drive to north) .Is the favorite vacation destination for the upper class people of Rio , amazing beaches and night life , very good restaurants, all kinds of outdoor activities and more than 300 hotel and lodges you can choose.
The weather is always warm and sunny even during the winter time and there are beaches all over the peninsula some are good for surf , but the majority are calm watter . Buzios is one of the best location in Brazil for scuba diving and is known as the capital of sailing of Brazil

Congrats on winning a performance award. I'm sure you earned it. As far as tips go, all the previous posters were correct. However, it would help if you'd mention your age, previous travel experience and most of all the things you really enjoy doing. Rio has it all! Have a great trip!!!
