We're staying in KK for 6 days in early July. We want to see the Orang-utans, but were wondering whether it was worth booking our own flights to Sandakan etc or spending less time and money by going to the orang-utans near the Shangri-la resort? We will have 2 children with us who are 12 and 10 years.

I think, it is absolutely worth the money!
I've not been at the KK orang-station, but friends told me, that it's very similar to a zoo.
Sepilok Sanctuary near Sandakan, where I've been, is a vast area of rainforest, where former Orangs are kept to adapt slowly to the wilderness. There are many Orangs of all ages and visitors are allowed to walk the jungle-paths from the station to the feeding-platforms.You will never forget to watch an Orang Utan walking slowly downhill through the forest to collect his lunch!

As the previous post said, the best place to see Orangutans is in Sandakan.
It is a bit away from Sandakan city and so you need to arrange some transportation by yourself. There are specific timings for feedings the ornagutans and so better to visit those times.
