As I live in Melb, can't help with any of the questions other than time to drive Adl - Melb. Most direct for that trip is via the Western Highway, which is 728 km. From Adl there is a dual carriage freeway to Murray Bridge (about 80 km) and until you get to Ballarat 100 km from Melb it is a single lane in each direction (with some passing lanes) - quite a good road and is a major truck route. Ballarat to Melb is dual carriage freeway. Time without stops is about 8 hours, but watch out for cops in some of he towns and stick to the speed limit or else the friendly coppers will give out tickets.
Adl to Perth is 2720 km, which would be 3 tired days drive.

North terrace is central so any Hotel in the city will be close but if you have a vehicle it may be cheaper to stay in the suburbs. Hotels close to or on North terrace are Stamford Plaza and Hyatt, I can recommend Medina Treasury apartments which are opposite the main Post Office, about 500 metres from North terrace. If you contact an accommodation place mention that you need 15 nights and you may get a reduction in the cost. The drive from Melbourne will take 7 - 8 hours dpending how often you stop, and yes, stick to the speed limit, Police hide behind bushes every few miles along there especially near Horsham.

hi,
okey... So you're thinking of enjoy open road freedom with campervans, well Aussie Campervans is the biggest suppliers of rental campervans and motorhomes in adelaide. When you are looking for perfect Campervans, you are probably best off searching the Internet for your Campervans, whether it is a Motorhome rental, a RV rental or whatever as you tends to get the best deals that way.
it's good reference for your happy holiday trip:

The Oaks Embassy and the Radisson on North Tce are good self contained apartments. Also the Pacific International apartments in Hindmarsh Square are good too. If you want just a hotel then the Sebel Playford is okay. I wouldn't stay in the Hilton or the Hyatt - whilst they are 5 star they're a little old and haven't had a refurbishment in ages.
You'll only really need a car if you want to go to the wine regions and even then you can just get a day tour (adelaide sightseeing do them). Otherwise Adelaide is a fairly walkable city unless you want to go to the suburbs. If you're staying for 15 days I'd try and organise a trip over to Kangaroo Island at some point too. Maybe 3-4 days. Or even a trip up the Murray for a few days (you can do weekend cruises). Yes, we're in a drought but there is still water in the Murray River!
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
