Being Victoria you can never tell what the weather will be like from hour to hour let alone day to day!
However, March can be very hot, the first weekend is a long one and I have suffered through many a HOT HOT Moomba festival and Grand Prix, but then we often have rain. This year was a lovely March, I was home for almost all of the month and generally the weather was great. It will be a bit cooler down the Ocean Road but should be nice travelling weather.

I have been in Melbourne several times in March, and most times the weather was great, nearly too hot sometimes. But as the previous poster said, you can be unlucky, and get bad weather in March (anywhere). Once in Melbourne I had the full scale of steaming hot weather and chilly days. Sometimes the mornings are chilly in March and then it gets really hot. So be prepared for everything - especially this bit further down south on the Great Ocean Road, as directly on the coast the weather is even more unpredictable and changes must faster. However, as someone interested in weather forecasts I often watch the Aussie weather from NZ, and see that the closer you get towards Adelaide the hotter it gets.

The worse the weather, the more dramatic and spectacular your photos of the coastline will be.
When we went in mid March 2005 it was a mix of sunshine and clouds with some showers. I'll never ever forget that wonderful strong wind from the Southern Ocean - I love wind. This was the freshest air I've ever breathed in my whole life. A warm fleece and a rain jacket were needed, though.

Hi, March temps tend to vary from low twenties to low thirties, usually all the very hot stuff from summer is over by then.
Be prepared for quick changing weather and don't try to cram too much into a single day. Take it easy and enjoy one of the most spectacular road trips the world has to offer. People can say all they like and you can look at all the photos you want, but until you have seen it for yourself .... you will be glad you took the trip. March - April is one of the better times to visit this area. Rain events happen (well, supposed to happen) later in the year, May through October.

Weather is never a problem in Melbourne.
As we say: if you do not like it, wait 5 minutes and it will change. The best part of the Great Ocean Road, apart from the views, is the food. An early start could have you breakfast in Queenscliff. Try to time your Lunching at the Grand Hotel in Lorne. Dining at the Irish Restaurant in Port Fairy would be nice. What's a few raindrops between friends :o)
