What is the "appropriate" generic taxi fare from GIG (Rio International Airport) to the Sheraton Rio Hotel and Resort?? We have heard all kinds of "quotes" and would like to hear from some "experts" who have actually used this type of service. Also, were you satisfied with the taxi, regret it, recommend some other type of transfer service, etc.

Well, way out there at the Sheraton, there's really no other alternative than to use taxis to get to any of the sights or nightlife. And put up with sitting in the traffic quite often.
There are pre-paid taxis from the airport which they will try to sell you as you emerge from customs, and there are the plain old yellow taxis waiting outside, honest and much less expensive on the meter. I'm too cheap and not paranoid enough to even think of the pre-paid.

If you are a driver in US you may submit into taking steps to get a International Permission to Drive. Here in Brazil is called PID (Permissão Internacional para Dirigir). United States and Brazil are signataries of Wien Agreement.
