| Alytaus Apskritis | staying with family on farm Posted: Wed June 4, 2008 08:10 PM UTC
Hello , we are 2 of us, and very interested in the Dzukijos region. and would like to visit beautiful rural villages with real food and old culture.people making cheese and bread , mushrooms and berries etc.
we are am not interested in big hotels and shopping, and would like to see the real nature and ancient customs and earthy village people who we feel comfortable with. Of course fresh air and good food is also a important! The Dzukijos region looks very rich in folk lore and tradition and it will be a pity to miss it. We travelled thru the Balkans and there was always people willing to give us food and accomadation, in their house for around 15 euro's or less. Is there any non comercial "old ladies" renting out rooms in the country some where around Dzukijos ? Any help will be appreciatted Thank you |

Prices have increased recently, so one shouldn't expect "...less" ;) . Though you never know for sure, but anyway - it's not sane to EXPECT less.
Your question is clear, and it would be realistic, say, few decades ago: any "non comercial old lady" would rent out a room or bed, though it was rather common to let the guests from the city stay overnight in the granary. Or in the barn on the hay. But since 1989-1995 situation have changed due to the gangs of bandits all over the eastern Europe, people do not trust the strangers anymore. And the news over TV or radio is also different now compared to the past, everybody aware about the crimes and won't invite any person(s) only because of his (their) nice smile(s). Balkans are different, southern people are much more friendly (and look more friendly) and open, their traditions are different. And we are the Balts, much more reserved and our friendliness is not the thing one will notice immediatelly, or, say, within 1 week. Another thing is that 20 years ago, or more, the private property was simply forbidden so everyone was in the same boat, waiting until it sink. Now if you rent the rooms - it's business. Need to pay tax. Need to have a licence. And need to live - no reason to wait until the boat will sink, it's already gone and everyone is on his own. So all those "non comercial old ladies" had turned into rather "comercial old ladies" ;). I doubt if it's posible to find such house or rooms via internet, unless somebody will recommend you one. It's more the matter of chance and luck. And what I've found after short googling are these: http://marcinkonys.infoseka.lt/sodyba_eng.htm http://www.nijolessodyba.visiems.lt/ (no En version, no email, only telephones) Marcinkonys is a centre of Dzukija Nac. Park, quite authentic old village with an old train station and the incredible toilet next to it (you would die of laughter), it's reasonably large, and the other (much smaller) villages you would visit with no problems. Though any other larger village is equally good option, say, Merkine, Zervynos, Perloja or even Druskininkai. Alytus itself is an industrial town, so probobly no reason to consider it.

It will be no a straight answer for your question, but rather about my 'private invstigations' (such a cool song). So probably most of below are obvious for you.
I (almost) decide to make my children unhappy (my oldest daughter prefers London by plane (such boring)hahaha or Black Sea beaches (probably too ) and go towards Estonia (who knows where is the end?hahaha). My first choice was to find a place with lake (canoe rivers) area which can be not far away from Vilnius, Kaunas, Druskienniki (an aqua park for my children),Trakai and Wigry/Sejny/Suwalszczyzna (in case of bad weather). At first glance I considered Trakai area ( a bit too far from Kaunas), Alytus (it looks not so interesting lakes), Lazdijai area (which have nice lakes- I belive). Then I also have noticed that a country accommodation is a bit more developed on Polish side, it's a bit cheaper.Lithuanian side 30-50 LT/PLN, Polish side 25-30 LT/PLN per night for one without boarding).I might be wrong with the prices in Lithuania as I don't understand much (only some) from Lithuanian pages. At the end I think to spend at the begining few nights at lake Galadus(but who knows). The usefull pages for me are: www.countryside.lt http://www.alytus-tourism.lt/ http://lazdijai-turizmas.lt/lt/apgyvendinimas/kaimo-turizmas/ http://temp.varena.lt/en/tourism.php If you go to Dzukija see also this pages: http://www.dzukijosparkas.lt http://info.druskininkai.lt/en_lankytinos_vietos/ http://marcinkonys.infoseka.lt/ I'd like also to see muslim (Tatar) villages and Salcininkai area with Dieveniskes park. Dzukija is most famous for Ula river (for me) Suwalszczyzna (PL): http://www.odr.zetobi.com.pl/agrotur/oferty/of_sejny.htm http://www.zielonewrota.pl/index.php?art=1005&p=50&k=10 http://www.suwalszczyzna.pl/eng_ver/eng01.htm

We appreciatte your straight talking answer!
Its such a shame that the world is getting smaller and more uniformed. When we were first forced to live with a little old lady, because the Hotel was full, we were so upset! But actually we really loved the real way of life, and the home food, and getting to meet the locals. It was the best learning experiance of our lives.Dont get us wrong we dont mind paying. Thank you for your truthful reply, the world is very greedy and getting greedier, and what with all the over taxation and commercial interests, the natural land is being destroyed by over priced cold artificial Hotels complex's This has made us re think our plan, and we shall now re examine our travel itenary. Best regards!

You have a lot of information there! We will look into your web addresses, you certainly now where to take the kids to make them happy. London is just another metropolis, your daughter is right'it can be boring! The countryside is more magical , more ancient and great for your health. I like your folk lore and festivals, the mushroom festival sounds great! Thank you for your help best regards!
