| Bucharest | Train & bike Posted: Wed June 4, 2008 03:09 PM UTC
Hello,
In august I 'll fly in to Bucharest Baneasa aiport. I would like to travel by train to Tulcea, taking my bike (unpacked) with me. Does anyone know if Romanian trains on that traject do take bikes? If they do, do I have to take a ticket for the bike? thanks, |

in august there is no direct train from bucharest to tulcea,
also you have to change trains at "Medgidia". the fast way with train is to use the dily train [nr' E 1636] that depart from GARA DE NORD A train station at bucharest 08:35 and arrived to Medgidia at 12:37 and then take the train [nr' R 8653] at 16:04 and arrived to tulcea at 19:33. in thos train there is no speshial vagon for passenger and bike like in europe but it need to be a luggage vagon. I dont know about a ticket for the bike. the romanian railway web is : www.cfrcalatori.ro I remember that I see a picture of two romanian people with 2 bike but they take a sleeper vagon with 2 bed and they take out the two wheel, like that it was more easy to put them in the cabin david

There is a direct train from Bucharest to Tulcea, but it doesn't leave from Bucharest North station like most other long-distance trains, it leaves from Bucharest Obor - the #1681 train starts daily from Bucharest Obor at 5.37AM and gets to Tulcea at 12.21PM.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have a luggage coach - but it might be possible to "persuade" the train's conductors to allow you and your bike aboard ;-)

Few years ago, I used to carry my bike with me be train, from Bucharest to the Carpathian Mountains. An easy way to do this is to tip the person taking care of the luggage car :) or to just pull the two wheels off and place the bike as a luggage in the dedicated place. What I would recommend is asking in the North Railway Station and they might make you buy a ticket or the luggage, go with the bike to the luggage car (even so, I used to lock it there tight to something stable, just for safety)
Let us know how you'll proceed. :) all best, radu
