as I look at "bahn" [europe train schedule]:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?ld=2 and also at "elvira" [hungary train schedule] there is no direct train between budapest to rome. what you have is daily direct train from budapest to "Venezia" Mestre trainstation and from there you can continiu to rome. train nr' are [240 VENEZIA EN] depart from budapest Keleti pu. station at 17:00 and arrivesd to Venezia Mestre at 07:04 the next morning. in this train you have sleeper and couchette. for the moment I can see that there is a Limited available discount one-way ticket already for budapest-Venezia Mestre it's cost 29 euro, you can see this: http://elvira.mav-start.hu/ for bus infor look : http://www.volanbusz.hu/en/ in the web you can see schedule and price for budapest-venice/rome

Depending on when you want to travel and how far you book ahead, flying may be the cheapest option. The lowcost carrier Wizzair flies between Budapest and Rome Fiumicino.

The cheapest and fastest is the airplane. The Wizzair flies to Rome/Fiumicino everyday. The ticket on midweeks is cheaper, on weekends more expensive.
Here the site in order to check it http://book.wizzair.com/skylights/cgi-bin/skylight Have a nice day. Laszlo
