Since you're arriving on the Independence Day weekend, it would be advisable to reserve ahead as bookings can become difficult on holidays. There are certainly car rental agencies at Logan airport. As to must-sees, just check out the tips under VT's Boston page. You will surely have your fill of lobster right in Maine. Resto menus usually indicate their lobster dinner price as depending on current market cost; when I was there 2 weeks ago, the average price was about $25. If you wish to stay somewhere cheap in Boston, check out the President's City Inn website below (located in Qunicy, a few mins. south of Boston) which is near a subway station (red line). A room with breakfast cost me $65.
