| Grand Canyon | South Kaibab Trail in late June Posted: Mon June 2, 2008 02:57 PM UTC
Has anyone ever done the hike on the South Kaibab Trail in late June? Please describe your experience!!
We are family hikers, not inexperienced but not hard core. We have shoes & camel backs, etc. We worry most about the steep hike out. We plan to take the first hiker's shuttle at 4am and go down to at least Cedar Ridge. Could we make it to Skeleton Point and still get out by 11 or 12? We want to hear about your hike!! Was it different for others in your party? Thanks!! |

I hope you realize how hot it's going to be. It's good that you're leaving in the morning, but bring lots of water (also, at least a bit of food) and, if you're from a humid climate (basically everything but the West), give yourself at least a full day to acclimate because it's not only excessively dry, but it's also 7000' at the rim. Most people complain about the way down. Your ankles and knees just aren't generally used to banging on rocks for several miles. It almost feels good to go back up in those situations.
But Cedar Ridge shouldn't be an issue. It's only about 1.5 miles. A lot of casually hiking tourists do this. If you do go to Skeleton Point and back, whether or not you're out by 11 depends on how quickly you did it (you shouldn't do it too quickly because it's gorgeous) and your general speed, but I'd think 10 more likely if you get on the trail at 5.
