| Bergen | 24 hours in Bergen? Posted: Mon June 2, 2008 09:55 AM UTC
My wife and I arrive in Bergen on Sept 8th prior to jumping onto Hurtigruten for the trip north starting on the 9th in the evening.
Could anyone please suggest the best hotel for the airport bus stop and the Hurtigruten dock? Also the best idea for our one day in Bergen Thanks David UK |

The city centre in Bergen is wery compact, many of the most popular attractions in Bergen are located around Bryggen and Trogallmeningen (where the airport bus also stops) any hotel in this area should would serve you well. I know there are other active forum members here who lives in Bergen so they should be able to give you more specific advice on hotel names.
I would recomend taking a walk around the city centre: Torgallmeningen, Bryggen, take the fernicular (Fløibanen) to take in the view. Try to take a walk around the narrow streets and have a look at the charming small wooden houses at Nordnes if you have the time. Bergen is one of the most beautiful cities there is, you'll love it! Enjoy :)

Aww, only one day in Bergen - that's definitely not enough, in my totally unbiased opinion ;o)
The airport bus stops several places in central Bergen - and there are lots of hotels close to the bus stops. As for the Hurtigruten dock, you'll probably get a taxi there (it's only a short taxi ride) - you'll probably want to stay somewhere near Torgalmenningen - the Fish Market - Bryggen. Loads of hotels in the area, I liked Clarion Collection Havnekontoret (review on my Bergen page, reviews of several other hotels too) but Havnekontoret is quite pricey. Tell us your budget and we'll be able to give you better advice.. :o) One day in Bergen... let's see... The funicular to mount Fløyen for great views of the town and surrounding islands - perhaps get a one-way ticket and walk down, it's a very nice walk! Visit Bryggen and perhaps one of the museums there, stroll around the fish market... Depends on your interests, really - there are several quite good museums in town, the Aquarium is nice, there are several very pretty areas of town worth visiting (Nordnes, Sandviken / Skuteviken - all within easy walking distance of the city centre) - tiny wooden houses, cobbled streets and alleys... Take a look at some of the Bergen pages here on VT for more info; this is mine http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/878cd/365da/ (VT member daarth lives in Bergen too, might want to check out his pages too!)

Thanks for the advice
The Funicular sounds an excellent idea and I will look for the fish market Where is the best place to eat fish nearby?

It depends - if you want a reasonably priced meal, try Madam Bergen in Strandgaten or Søstrene Hagelin in Olav Kyrres gate (you'll find more info incl exact addresses + websites in a restaurant tip on my Bergen page, I can't remember at the moment - and it's too hot to think here in Bergen today!!!;o) - both places are famous for their fish cakes, and both have small cafes where you can get fish soup, fish burgers and the like. Both also have very reasonably priced lunch offers (at around 60 NOK).
Another option would be Fiskekrogen, right by the fish market - or Enhjørningen http://www.enhjorningen.no/english/frameset.htm at Bryggen - which are supposed to be pretty good, and which of course are more expensive. But you'll of course find fish on pretty much any menu in Bergen!;o)
