| Bucharest | Affordability question Posted: Mon June 2, 2008 08:01 AM UTC
I'm trying to find a European destination that is still on the affordable side in U.S. dollars. That's getting harder to do. Can anyone that is familiar with it tell me if things are as cheap there (in dollars) as I've heard they were? Also, does anyone have any recommendations on how to get there from the U.S. cheaply. Thanks..

Hi,
I have bad answer for you, Romania is an expensive east country! I recommend you our neighbor Bulgaria, it's much cheaper than Romania. All the best, Sandu

This question all depends on what you consider affordable really. Everyone's version
It is not as cheap as it was a few years ago. There are still some cheap places in Romania to visit, and stay..but the cities and tourist destinations are not in this category anymore. How much you willing to spend daily for your budget, and I can let you know if Romania is realistic or not. Cheers, Christian

I can get an idea of airfare and hotel on Kayak or Travelocity. I guess I'm trying to find out about the cost of eating out, (on the) ground transportation (outside of Bucharest where I know taxis are cheap and subways are available), activities, and souvenirs. Activities and souvenirs don't lend themselves to thinking in terms of cost per day but food and ground transport do. So I will throw out that I would consider $50 (U.S.) per couple total including both lunch and dinner (we aren't big breakfast eaters) and $10 per couple for ground transport to be "cheap." Thanks for your help.

I went there in March from Orlando Florida to Dublin to Milan, to Bucharest. I spent a overnight waiting in Malepensa in Milan for a Easy jet flight in the morning. At that time, It cost me about $350 to Dublin, $80 to Milan, and then about $75 to Bucharest. I stayed with friends so I don't know about lodging, but we did go to Brasov and the old Royal Castle and that was cheap since we had a car. The food cost in Bucharest was almost the same as in the USA. Having said all that, I then went Back to Milan and took a FLYLAL flight to Vilnius Lithuania where prices are quite cheap. You could also go to Riga and Liepaja Latvia where things are cheaper than Western Europe. I was there last October. Better hurry as all these places will catch up to western Europe soon. Bulgaria might also be a good choice.

What a great answer. Do you mind sharing how you got from Orlando to Dublin and Dublin to Milan so cheaply (which airlines). Also, can I ask if you went a different way home because of existing travel plans or if it was due to finding other airfare deals that were worth the detours? If because or other airfare deals, would you mind sharing specifics on the return legs as well. Thanks...
