Greetings fellow VTers,
Can anyone tell me how often the train runs from Budapest to Pecs daily and if it is possible to buy tickets in advance.
Thanks

http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/international_guests.shtml

will give you the timetable (but not the fares). There are trains throughout the day, leaving either from Deli or Keleti stations.

There is no need to book the tickets in advance, unless it's a reservation-only train. Some of the services are, but you could easily buy the ticket at the station whilst in Budapest (you can buy up to 5 minutes before departure as long as there is availability).

http://www.mav.hu/english/passenger_transport.php

is the Hungarian railway website in English. It will give you times and fares (in HUF). You can't book online.

You can find the timetables and the fares with this searcher:

http://elvira.mav-start.hu/elvira.dll/xslms/index?language=2

Between Budapest and Pécs, there are Intercity trains in every 2-3 hours from Budapest-Keleti station(journey time ~3 hours). For these trains you must pay extra, which costs 520 HUF, but it includes the seat reservation. You can buy it easily at the station before the depature. (Except the friday evening rush hour)
Normal tariff "fast" trains from Budapest-Déli station starts at 7.30 and 15.30, and journey times are ~3,5-4 hours.

Those departing from Keleti are the IC trains and those from Deli are the fast ("gyors") trains. Both are great, IC has air conditioning and is more reliable. And faster.

Thank you everyone for responding.

We are there on business and would prefer the IC trains leaving the Kelti train station...

If we go to the Kelti tarin station a day or two before our trip to Pecs can we make seat reservations for our trip to Pecs and back?

Thanks,

Roily

Yes, you can.
Actually you can do it online too:

http://www.mav-start.hu/utazas/elovet_int_jegyrendeles.php

Here's some help, as it is in Hungarian only:

Window 1

Subject of reservation
O Domestic supplementary ticket and seat reservation
O One way O Roundtrip

Personal Data
Name []
Phone No. []
E-mail []
Date of journey planned []

Continue... Delete

Window 2

Personal Data

Name [] E-mail []
I'd like to receive the registry code via SMS: [Nem = No / Igen = Yes]

Data of one-way domestic supplementary ticket and seat reservation
TICKET (left column)
From where [ - Choose -]
To where [-Choose-]
Class [2nd class only / 1st class where applicable / positively 1st class (=csak 1.o.)]
[nemdohányzó = nonsmoker / dohányzó = smoker]

KEDVEZMENY = DISCOUNT
Full fare []pcs
..% discount []pcs
No ticket - reservation only[]pcs
Alltogether []pcs

SEAT RESERVATION (right column)
From where [-Choose-g
To where [-Choose-]
Train [-Choose-]
Seat reservation pax []
Planned journey date []
further reservation
From Where [-Choose-]
etc.

Buttons: << Back Continue... Delete

You will receive a confirmation within 24 hours. You can pick up your ticket till half an hour before departure. No online payment can be made, this is for reservation purposes only.

Please note that this system will not check train schedules - so you CAN send a reservation for a seat on a train that is not running on the day chosen. However, you'll be notified "A rendeles nem teljesitheto" meaning "The required reservation can not be made". This message would appear too when the train is fully booked (or at least the contingent for online sales is booked).

If you reservation is okay, you'll be confirmed "A rendeles teljesitheto" meaning "The required reservation can be made", this means you're okay :)
