| Pristina | I need an expert's help Posted: Mon June 2, 2008 01:30 AM UTC
Our son is going to be in Pristina all summer. We would like to plan to visit him halfway through. I'm having a hard time figuring out where would be the easiest place to meet him. That meaning, where is it easiest for him to get to.
Can he easily get to Dubrovnik and how long would it take him? Would Venice be better? Is there something faster for him? I would appreciate your suggestions. |

I visited a friend in Pristina when I used to live in Ohrid, Macedonia in 1999-2000. Ohrid is a beautiful town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both nature and culture, located on Lake Ohrid near where Macedonia, Albani, and Greece meet. It is inexpensive, but might be crowded during the Ohrid Summer Festival (mid July-mid August). If you stayed there, your son could take a bus via Skopje and join you. Or you could visit him in Prinstina and actually see where he is working and living. If he can do it, so can you. Dubrovnik would be even more crowded and expensive than Ohrid. It will be overrun with tourists during the summer. You can reach Ohrid by bus from Thessaloniki or Skopje, but I would fly in directly from Zurich or Vienna, if possible. Enjoy!

I agree with the previous answer that Macedonia and especially the Ohrid region are good options. Apart from being very interesting places to visit, there are good transport connections from Pristina to Skopje and from there throughout Macedonia. However I don't know how easy it will be for you to get there, air connections into Skopje are relatively limited. Other nearby airports include Thessaloniki (although public transport from Greece to Macedonia is rather limited) and Sofia, Bulgaria from where there are buses to Skopje.
Dubrovnik would probably not be so convenient for your son, it would be likely to involve a rather long overnight bus journey or a series of shorter journeys by day. As for Venice, that would be a gruelling overland journey from Pristina; by air it would involve connecting flights which might be rather expensive in summer.

It depends on money really. If money isn't an issue, there are direct flights from Prishtina airport to London, Copenhagen, Tirana, Istanbul, Ljubljana, Verona, Vienna, Budapest, Berlin and several other German cities. Flights to any of these cities would be quicker than taking a combination of buses up to Dubrovnik, which would be a gruelling trip to do all at once, especially in summer.
By bus, he can easily get to Skopje, which is about 4 hours away. Sofia is another 4-5 hours from Skopje, so it is possible to do in a day. There are night buses from Prishtina over the mountains to Tirana, and also over to Ulqini (Ulcinj) on the coast in Montenegro. Budget airlines (Wizzair, Easyjet etc.) can get you to Sofia or Thessaloniki, but flights to Prishtina, Skopje or Tirana tend to be a bit more expensive. I also agree with the first poster...why not visit him in Prishtina? It's an interesting city, and to be shown round by someone who is based there would be a great opportunity. Hope this helps ;@P

If you are coming to visit him, chances are you are flying in to Pristina. I'd suggest having him meet you at the airport. It's easy to find and it's a tiny airport, with only 4 gates. Everyone arriving at Pristina airport passes through the same customs area, which exits into a parking lot. Just left as you exit customs is a set of picnic tables with a roof covering them. That's where I'd tell him to meet you.
Alternative: Just north of the airport is the main east-wet road through Kosovo. There is a very nice restaurant called Aviano on this road and within about 3 miles of the airport. Any taxi driver will know where it is and you can meet him there and have a nice meal at the same time.

Skopje is 2.5 hours is away and Belrade is 8 hours away. Airfare to Belgrade tends to be cheaper though. If you are looking for a seaside holiday, consider Thessaloniki in Greece (and all of Khalkidiki penninsula)
