Hi,
Liverpool is my closest airport for budget flights and I've been looking at visiting Bosnia this year. What I've found would apply to Serbia equally (in fact, Serbia looks somewhat more convenient). Seems to me that a good way to do it would be take a direct flight with the likes of Ryanair to somewhere like Venice or Budapest - plenty of good deals from Liverpool - and then take public transport through the neighbouring countries to your final destination. For trains, the man in seat 61 has great info. www.seat61.com. It focuses on London to Belgrade routes, going via Cologne, but if you choose not to do this, it still gives you an idea of what's available and journey times. There are no flights from Liverpool to Cologne, and any from Manchester are probably not budget, so you'd probably want to go via Venice or Budapest instead. Budapest will be far more convenient for Belgrade I imagine - there is a direct train. Going via Venice would be more convoluted, but you could visit some other cities if you have the time. Deutsche Bahn has train timetables, www.eurolines.com will give bus timetables. I think which is best depends on the route - for Bosnia, for example, I found that going one way on train, returning by bus fit better with my timetable.

Or Belgrade-London Stansted with German Wings, then coach National Express London-Stansted-Liverpool, relatively frequent buses, check the National Express website, takes about 7 hours (one change), approx. £40 RTN

That's interesting. I had no idea German Wings had that route. Off to check their website now...

It's worth looking at www.whichbudget.com and www.haresfares.com to see what budget carriers fly suitable routes.
www.flightmapping.com is also very useful. Birmingham, East Midlands and Manchester (and Doncaster, come to that) would all be feaisble, using train or coach for onward transport to Liverpool. www.nationalrail.co.uk for train times and fares. www.nationalexpress.com (or, possibly, www.megabus.com) for caoch times and fares. Coach is cheaper but takes longer.
