it's quite easy to find all sorts of information on Vietnam train fares and timetables, but really this one is quite difficult to find:

Anyone know much it costs to travel with train from Hanoi to Haiphong? I found some timetables but just cant find prices.

Also if you know if there are price differences between "fast" and "slow" trains between Hanoi and Haiphong it would be nice.

You are right, it is not easy to find a timetable of local train routes, like Hanoi-Haiphong. The official website of Vietnam Train Company has been down. Here is the information of Hanoi-Haiphong train timetable (and other routes too).

Unfortunately, it seems that there are no "fast" train for that route. And the local train routes in VN are very slow and uncomfortable. The alternative way is to take a bus. Hope you have good time there.
(please note that the link above is not an ad, I just searched and found from the google).

I think you can contact a bus company like Sinh Cafe in Hanoi to book a seat from Hanoi to Hai Phong. Just 2 & 1/2 hour drive.
