I'm heading to Big Sur for a weekend in a few weeks, and was wondering if any of the local beaches allow bonfires??

That would likely be a No, for Big Sur at least. Bonfires are popular at night on some beaches far from any natural park, but because of pollution and forest fire threat, they are losing popularity, and the state parks restrict them heavily. Check the Big Sur California State Park official website though, I could be wrong in my thinking...
