| Odessa | American traveler Posted: Sun June 1, 2008 04:18 AM UTC
Hey all!! I am a black male who is planning a trip tp the Ukraine. I've heard stories about foreigners being hassled by police. Since I will stick out like a sore thumb, can anyone give me tips on being safe?

Given the last response, which was from a Russian citizen, I would recommend having a local Ukranian VT member friend show you around. If you are in the company of someone who lives there, you should be relatively safe from undue harrassment. Start with contacting VT member HunterV and see what happens, but there's also a number of friendly looking females (I would say gorgeous looking) of high VT rank who live right in Kiev. Network by VTmail, and plan the trip from the airport, at least. After a few days in the region, you'll get a feel for the actual risk and may decided to continue independently.

I have been to Odessa and Nikolaev many times and have seen black people there.
I have never heard anyone being in trouble. People do stare and that's because it is strange to see and they are not used to it. When I first went there people would look at me because I have an English accent, and still get that occasionally. I could be wrong but I suspect there would be more trouble in Kiev. Remember that Odessa is a seaport and has many cruises coming in there so people should be more used to strangers now.

Some 'unfliendliness' might happen, that's true
The advice is just usual though. Don't go to some 'dark side' streets, especially alone. stay in populated areas (such as Primorski boulevard, Potyomkinska stairs, etc). The city centre in Odesa is absolutely safe

By all means go! The police do not hassle people like they used to. Carry a copy of your passport though and stay in the city.
If people seem rude to you on the street, don't take offense. They seem that way to us white Americans, too. :) Although you will be an extreme minority here, you might find less bias than in the southern US. Would like to see you report back to this forum on your experiences. This question comes up a lot.
