| Penang | Penang Hill query Posted: Sat May 31, 2008 04:09 PM UTC
Vanakam, saudara-saudara dan saudari-saudari.
Its been ages since I went to Penang (last trip was in 1993). I'd like to do this - take the furnicular up to the top & then walk all the way down. Is this possible, or am I insane for even thinking about it ? :) Also, this Canopy Walk thing - has it re-opened, or is it still closed ? Any nice restaurant or cafe about half-way down the hill ? Appreciate any advice from anyone, cheers. |

According to this link you can walk down to the botanical gardens in about 1.5 hours and then catch a bus from there. There is also information about the Canopy walk thing!

There are several trails. But I would recommend you the easiest. To walk down by the tarred (jeep) road to the entrance of Botanical Gardens.
Along the way, there are no restaurants except at half-way, there is house called "84" with restrooms and where there are benches with free coffee, tea and biscuits - self-service, wash the cup before and after which are made available by the generosity of daily local hikers. The only thing difficult of this trail is that some sections have steep road gradient and if you have bad knees, you will have to endure. There are no traffic on the road except for authorised motorcycles and jeeps for the people who live or work at the hill radar station.

I was there in 1962 to 1964.....yep 40 odd years ago. A friend and I caught the "train" up the hill.........and simply walked down again. We were living in Tanjong Token, and headed in that direction. Forget where were eventually arrived at a road......but I do remember it was a lot of fun.............\\
