hi we are going to Penang in November is it easy to get budget accommodation when you are there. Most of the hotels are expensive, we are worried if we don't book we may not get something. Is it like in Bali with heaps of budget hotels, when we went Tioman we got cheap accommodation when we arrived, but don't know what it's like in Penang. Can someone recommend good, cheap hotel.thank you.

Yes, no probs, loads of backpacker places. Have a look at LP (lonely Planet) or go online. Penang is a stunning place, with lots of newly renovated buildings and temples.
While you are there, pop into the newly renovated Eastern & Oriental Hotel, the sister of Raffles in Singapore. Have a look around at the beautiful rooms and treat yourself to Breakky/lunch with some Traditional English fare.
Enjoy

Should not be a problem for budget backpacker accommodation on Lebuh Chulia (Chulia Street) and adjoining areas in downtown Georgetown area. The other popular accommodation is the Batu Ferringghi area if you want to stay near a beach but it caters more for sun-bathing tourists who can afford higher hotel rates and reservation is recommended during the year end holiday season.

Penang Re: penang accommodation....Cathay Hotel

Hi,
There is a nice old historical budget hotel around Georgetown Penang with most of the tourist sites within walking distance.e.g. Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and the clubbing area. It has an open-air courtyard too.

The room rates are very economical and with very basic and simple amenities.

You can check out more photos of it at http://zoom2see.blogspot.com/2008/07/penang-budget-hotel-cathay.html

If this is not your liking, then you can always check out those guesthouses around Chulia Street too.
