Nassau attractions in nassau
Posted: Fri May 30, 2008 02:11 PM UTC
We are going to the Bahamas in June and was wondering what are some good attractions to go into the island for. We are staying at the Atlantis but would like to get into the town to shop. Are there any tours available? What are some good restaurants that are "home grown"?
Thanks!!

Are you a group of all adults or are there children in the group? Are you looking for fine dining or light lunches and snack type food?

Thanks so much for replying. We will have 3 children in our group. I am looking for light suppers or "fun" type eating. We don't want the formal sit down and wait 3 hours for our menu type of eating. I was thinking more informal type places.

First of all the straw market is a good place to go in town. The kids can buy little souvenirs for just a few dollars. You can then go to Senor Frogs next door for lunch. Depending on the ages, the kids might like to see Fort Charlotte. Also the Pirate Museaum might appeal. Anthony's Grill just acroass the street from Atlanis has good food at fair prices and a laid back attitude. They also have a kids menu. They are open from 7:30 am for breakfast also. There are lots of local places to eat,the only thing is you will have to take a cab or the water taxi to get back to the main land from Atlantis. When you check in, go to the lobby of the Coral Towers and pick up a free copy of "what-to-do". It's a little magazine that lists all the things to see and do and where to eat in Nassau.

Re: restaurants, if you want real local food, hit the Fish Fry. It's a collection of casual/rustic spots on the main road past Junkanoo Beach (between Cable Beach and downtown). Many choices abound at that location, some more "rustic" than others. The conch salad at the Red Snapper is outstanding. Depending on the spot, you may have to wait longer for your food than in the States for example, but you are on island time. Nothing in the Bahamas is timely. Don't be in a rush, order another beer or soda for the kids and enjoy the setting. The Poop Deck is another quality choice but more pricy.

Atlantis, meal plan or not, is overpriced in all respects. I'd dine out off Paradise Island whenever reasonable unless your intent is to go high-end in which case Atlantis fulfills that need.
