| Zanzibar Island | Accomodation and diving in Zanzibar Posted: Fri May 30, 2008 02:42 PM UTC
Hi
I'm off to Zanzibar for 3 - 4 weeks at end of July. I am mainly going for the diving but am looking for help from fellow travellers regarding accommodation (preferably under $50USD per night) and other tips on worthwhile activities to do. Any help is appreciated Clare |

Clare
You can rent a boat (and skipper) and go out to the old prison island just off Stone Town. The snorkelling is good around there, but the best bit for me are the giant tortoises that are kept in the grounds of the old prison building. Some are absolutely massive and I was told weigh about 300kgs. Certainly worth a visit if you are there for a few weeks. Also, go to a spice farm. You can get shown around a farm which may take an hour of so, and see and smell, and buy loads of different spices that are grown there. I didn't think it sounded like something I'd normally do, but it was extremely interesting. Have a look at peoples Zanzibar pages because there are quite a few around with excellent tips already written. I've got a few tips / pictures about accomodation if you want to see. Have a brilliant time, it is stunning there. Pete

Hi Clare,
I have a good page here on Zanzibar Island: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/30b4a/221cec/ (Including diving). You want to be only on the East Coast for beaches and diving, west coast for history. THe last 2 guest houses are in Stone Town and way under $50. Malindi is super budget, but nice. I have a review of it on my Stone Town page here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/30b4a/221ced/ Have a great time, All the best, DAO

Sorry!
Tembo House Hotel is the most expensive luxury hotel in Stone Town. Malindi is still cheap.

The Police have made arests and they now belive the 2 raids were inside jobs. Trully unbeliveable in such a small island. Most hotels have security and no real history of criminal acts. It looks like the Police are on top of this and the crime wave is over. Mostly they wanted the hotel safes. I would not worry. Stupid criminals do idiotic acts everywhere. The Police are protective of the tourist industry and they already have roadblock checkpoints all over the island.
Have a great time.
