I was just there in April. I loved Nanjing! My friends and I visited Zhongshan National Park. It was so beautiful there. Besides the mountains and trees, there are plenty of parks there where you eat picnic and walk around. Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum, Ming Tombs (similar to the one in Beijing with the row of guardians), pagodas, pavilions, etc. We went around the park with one of the cart operators (US$20), which was great since my friends had young kids and one of their mom's went with us.
Zhongshan is out of the city so you'll have a take a taxi to get there and back(that's what we did). We did see tourists there but all Chinese tourists. I didn't see any Westerners. Other places I visited when I was there...Nanjing Massacre Museum, Zhonghuamen (Ming Dynasty City Wall ), and the Confucius Temple and Qin Huai River area. I was only in Nanjing for 2 days. Could have seen more but with the kids and grandmother we got slowed down. I had a great time though. Nanjing is really developing. You will be amazed at how the city is, esp considering its recent history.

It's actually called Zijinshan (Purple Gold Mountain), not Zhongshan. Zhongshanling refers to Sun Yat-Sen's Mausoleum.
"Not to be missed" and "out of touristic guides" are not mutually exclusive. That means, places frequented by tourists are not necessarily not worth seeing. I would strongly recommend the Nanjing Massacre Memorial. I'm sorry if you came for fun and enjoyment, because this is a place that holds a special significance for Nanjing's history and also for China's; and even more so for the tens of thousands who lost their innocent lives there. It stands as a reminder to never take peace for granted; peace that has been only been achieved after the deaths and suffering of an unthinkable amount of people. This is a memorial for those who died wanting peace, but who were unfortunately unable to enjoy it, unlike us today. Nanjing Massacre Memorial official English-language website: http://www.nj1937.org/english For travellers who read Chinese, this is another good website for information about the Nanjing Massacre: http://neverforget.sina.com.cn On a lighter note, I also enjoyed having fun on the pedal boats on the Qinhuai River at Fuzimiao.

Thank you for all your comments heywinks & ellyse.
We will visit the memorial as you recommend. And the pedal boats too ;-). We did something like that in "Beijing Summer Palace" two years ago. We enjoyed very much. We visit Shanghai too. We will visit the Zijinshan (Purple Gold Mountain) National Park too. Sure. Thanks. Now I'm not quit sure which places should we visit in China ("near" Nanjing). We are going to stay in China for 20 days. 1). Is it possible to get Shuzou from Nanjing by train?. 2). How many "places of interest" can we get by train?. Which are they?. 3). Are "Near" Nanjing some kind of "Park, Mountains or lagoons (natural scnaries)··· not to be missed". I think we will move arround Nanjing by train but I don't know if there are "enough connections" from Nanjing to another citys. With "out of touristic guides" i mean: "something different experience". I appreciate a lot take contact with local people likes.I live in a very touristic city and I think the tourist lose a big opportunity to see something different. Thank you very much for your time. P.D.: Excuse my poor english. Is not very good but I think I can make myself understood. ;-) Salute

1) Yes, it's under 2 hours journey time by the fastest D trains.
2) Huh? Do you mean destinations, or the actual sights? Your question isn't very well-phrased and I can't make out exactly what you mean. 3) Zijinshan itself is a big park. The Ming Hongwu Mausoleum there is the 2nd major sight after Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum, and it's also a UNESCO World Heritage site. For more gardens and such, take a bus to Yangzhou (not to be confused with Yangshuo!) for those. Also, there's a very nice garden in the Presidential Palace in Nanjing, which's also another worthy sight.
