| Salzburg | Time of travel to Salzberg Posted: Fri May 30, 2008 06:12 AM UTC
Hello, Could you please let me know how long the train trip is from Munich to Salzberg is. We are staying in Munich the weekend before Christmas and hoping to go to Salzberg for a day trip and do a Sound of Music tour.
Thank you so much, Kind regards, Helen |

Depending on which train you take, it's between 1 hour 40 minutes and 2 hours. You can check times and fares on
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml Make sure you get the spelling right, it's SalzbUrg, not berg. If you decide on the slower regional trains, you can use the Bavaria ticket, which is 27 Euro for up to five people. It's valid on the way to Salzburg.

Hi Helen
Just to add that the faster train is more expensive (not by much though) and make sure you reserve a seat (also a fee) as this train is very popular. There is so much more to Salzburg than the Sound of Music tour - but I suppose that's what you want to do. Its a great walking city and a few hours won't do it justice. Have a nice time anyway! John

Hi John,
Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate the advice on booking a seat and the price differences. We only arrive from Melbourne in Munich for two days on the way to my husband's family in Portugal. I would adore spending more time in Salzburg, but it is a bonus visit as our ticket to Portugal took us that way. I am hoping to spend the morning walking a little of Salzburg before the tour. Thanks again for your advice. Regards, Helen

Hi Helen
Thanks for your kind words. Just a thought, when you arrive in Salzburg by train, make sure you make your way to the 'Altstadt' (old town) as your first impression when coming out of the station may disappoint! As in most places, the main train station is situated in the not so nice area and you have to go to the Zentrum (centre) where most of the attractions are. You could walk it or take a bus. If you walk it will take about 20 minutes but you will already pass some of the attractions like the Mirabell Palace and Gardens (although in December, not much to see in the gardens) the Salzburg Baroque Museum. Mozarts Residence (not his birth place) in Marketplatz. You end up in Linzer Gasse which is interesting - on then over the bridge to the old town with Mozarts birthplace right in front. Spend some time in Getreidegasse with its many shops (mostly tourists) but do explore the many little arcades off this street. It being December, the main square should have stalls with many items for Christmas (Advent market). Don't forget to rug up! Have a great time, John
