I can't help you with trains and buses as I had a rented car when I was there. There are a number of budget priced hotels available in Toledo and you will find them on www.venere.com. The one we stayed at was lovely and depending on what time of the year you will be there has room rates starting at 60 Euros per night for a single. It is very well situated and you can walk to everywhere you need to go from there. It is:
Hotel Sercotel Pintor El Greco - Toledo Alamillos del Tránsito, 13 - 45002 Toledo Just be aware that Toledo after nightfall can be very dark in places as many of the sidestreets are not all that well lit. I really don't think there is anything to worry about, it's just that you mentioned that you are travelling alone and the dark streets can be a little spooky. Great place Toledo, enjoy your visit!

Hi,
The first thing is take the Bilbao metro from Plentzia (line 1) to Bilbao - Abando 22 stations so give yourself plenty of time. The train that I found leaves Bilbao-Abando at 8.55. Arrives in Madrid at 15.00 change here for a train that leaves at 15.50 and gets to Toledo at 16.20. Unfortunately you don't give dates so cannot go further with my limited Spanish for prices.

Hi Edith,
When I have to go towards the South, I prefer to take a bus to Madrid and then change there. Although with the new trains, the trip to Madrid takes the same time as with Continental Auto coaches, Continental buses run more often that trains. Anyway, I don't think there is direct transport, so probably you will have to change in Madrid anyway: trains from Bilbao arrive in Madrid at Chamartin station (North) and trains for Toledo (also AVE) depart from Atocha Station. coaches from Bilbao arrive at Intercambiador de Avenida América. Not sure if buses for Toledo depart from that same station or from Mendez Alvaro. Check www.movelia.com for info about buses. In Toledo I know only Hotel Mayoral. I booked with bancotel so it was good price (50 Eur in 2005). Hotel is good, but it's located near the bus station in Toledo, and you'll need 20-30 minutes walk *UP* the hill to Toledo old centrum (Zocodover). There are many hotels and hostels around Zocodover, so it may be better to stay there.
