Nairobi How to get to the Sheldrick Orphanage and Giraffe Centre
Posted: Thu May 29, 2008 01:57 PM UTC
My wife and I are flying out to Nairobi in July where we will have almost 2 spare days at a small hotel near Nairobi University before embarking on a 10 day overland truck drive through Kenya and Tanzania games parks.

Before we set off on the safari we really want to have a day at the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre to see the Rothschild giraffes plus, whilst we are in the area, a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum would be good. At present I am not sure how to get there and don't know if our hotel in Nairobi (Boulevard Hotel) will have such tours on offer.

As many of you have been there on this forum, please could you let me know how you go there - taxi, tour from hotel etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Lee

Negotiate a price and book a taxi driver for the day - an easy option.

I second the taxi-suggestion. I did exactly the same thing on one of my visits to Nairobi, and as all of those places are more or less on the same side of town your best bet is to book a taxi for a couple of hours. There's usually lots of them around the hotels.

And I assume you are aware that the elephant orphanage is not open all day? When I went there a few years ago they were only open for an hour in the morning from 10-11 or so. Best thing is to give them a ring when you're in Nairobi to make sure.

If you sponsor one of the babies (through Care for the Wild) you can negotiate more time at the orphanage. Highly recommend you do that.

Hi Lee,
It is indeed best to hire a taxi to visit these attractions. They are more or less in the same area. Boulevard Hotel offers tours but it is QED by oneself..
I am a "Friend of the Elephant" The Netherlands. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust can be visited from 11.00 to 12.00 (open to the general public). If you foster an elephant you may visit them exclusively from 17.15 to 18.00.
Enjoy your stay in Kenya!
Regards, Mwikali
