I'm trying to decided which of the two youth hostels to stay in. Would Menaggio or Como be a better place to stay? I'd want to explore the whole lake, so which one has the easiest access to public transport?

I would say they both have easy access, bus wise, to the lake. If your planning on taking boats up and down the lake it can get quite expensive but the better access for boats would be at Como.

Also if your planning to take the bus up and down the lake, Menaggio would be the better bet because your in the middle of the lake and travel time would be far less than staying in Como.

if you are young enought to stay in a youth hostel, Como should be more appropriate than Menaggio and further is the best base for returning to an airport or Milan.

Try the restaurant in the youth hostel in Menaggio while you're there...they have amazing food.
