Yes, a very good idea. Pavia has an interesting historical centre with several medieval buildings, nice shops and good restaurants. There's a nice informative website in English about Pavia: http://www.pv.infn.it/~cecco/infn/pavia.html

About transportation: very well connected by train; ride takes about half an hour. Don't miss San Michele cathedral and Certosa. Enjoy your trip.
