New Orleans Getting Married at St Louis Cathedral
Posted: Wed May 28, 2008 10:39 PM UTC
Question, we planned our wedding at St Louis Cathedral and everyone is now telling us that there is no way to get our guests to St charles street, where our reception will be held at the House of Broel. Is this true? We only have 100 guests that will be attending the reception.

If this is the case and not enough transportation can get through to that street- any other places around there within walking distance that you can recommend for the Reception?

Thanks so much, Elaine

Hi Elaine. Saint Charles is one of the thoroughfares of New Orleans. There is a streetcar which runs from Canal Street up Saint Charles to Carrolton. It's an easy walk up Chartres Street (the street which runs through Jackson Square) to Saint Charles and Canal. Also, if you walk through or past the square you'll be on Decatur -another main thoroughfare - where they'll easily catch a cab. The following is a link to the transportation section of my New Orleans page. You'll find more details on the aforementioned streetcar and taxis. E-mail me if you'd like further info.

Hello Renee. You're absolute right, cars can go up Chartres. Sometimes, during festivals (like French Quarter Fest) they block the street from cars but that's an exception more than a rule. Consequently, I don't think transporting 100 guests via car through Chartres is efficient. Depending on the date and time, parking and maneuvering could be a problem.

I agree with Rene and William. I don't know why people could not get from the Cathedral to St. Charles. Although depending on the day and time, the French Quarter is very conjested and some streets do close to car traffic, Bourbon for one and I believe Royal. Cross streets remain open.

It would be difficult to walk. It get pretty humid and warm here. One thing to keep in mind though is that parking can be difficult in the Quarter. On street parking is even more difficult. Your guests will likely park several blocks away. Here is a link that may be helpful. You might also go to a maoing site, like maoquest and get directions from the church to the reception.

Good luck!

Below is a link where you can download maps of parking lots in the area.

If you guests will be staying at hotels in the quarter, they might consider using a taxi.

Becuase of the difficultly in parking and your likely to be in multiple locations and blocks apart, you probably won't be able to get them all into a procession from the church to the House of Broel. I would check with the recetpiton hall and/or the city tourist bureau to see if the can offer any suggestions.

St. Charles Avenue, Canal Street and Decatur are fairly large streets. you can
