| Warsaw | Accessible (disabled) toilets Posted: Wed May 28, 2008 04:41 PM UTC
Going to Poland for the first time to celebrate my friends wedding. As a full time electric wheelchair user (can't stand or walk at all) I am a bit concerned about being able to "spend a penny". Anyone know if / where the accessible (disabled) toilets are in Krakow and Warsaw?

I had a similar problem in Budapest a couple of years ago. Best way to gain reliable information is to look for a local handicapped organisation.

there is a booklet about all toilets in europe that are accesible for handicapped people, there is also a so-called "Euro-key" that opens all toilets for handicapped people, your organisations for handicapped people in your own country should know more about it.

I doubt the Euro-Key covers places outside of A-CH-D -- it's not very widely used around the rest of Europe. GB has its own key scheme RADAR. I've honestly no idea about Poland.

If you Google "poland disabled toilets" you will find an overall description of what the situation is. And then if you substitute "warsaw" and "kracow" for "poland" you will find further info. It's not very much but some of the sites will give you general info. One site says that airports, shopping centres and various other places have disabled toilets.

It would help if your country of residence was listed, as then it might be possible for VTers to direct you more specifically to a source of information in your home country.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. The webs site is great - doesn't seem to be anything similar for Warsaw though.
I am from London, England, where accessible toilets are fairly frequent and accessible with a RADAR key. I was hoping a wheelchair user who had visited Warsaw / Krakow might have seen this posting - although some places say they have facilities for disabled people - often they are not that accessible so I hoped to hear from a wheelchair user who had used the facilites!! (The last hotel I was in, in the UK it said it was fully accessible - couldn't get into the bathroom at all in the first room and in the second it had bars round the toilet but I couldn't use the wash basin, the shower or the bath. And there were 6 steps to get into the breakfast hall!!)

Just a suggestion, try phoning the Spinal Injuries Association, even though that may not be relevant to your particular disability. Its counterpart in Scotland, the Spinal Injuries Scotland, kept a data base of accessible accommodation and the like all over the world, so it may be that SIA have a similar one - they should, as they are much larger!! Or John Groom Association, I think that's the name of the organisation.

You could also post here information where exactly you are going to stay or go and then people who have been there might respond. I've seen disabled toilets at the MacDonald's and the KFC, probably most malls will have them too. As for the other places, the situation varies. I've read that a Warsaw guide for disabled tourists is in preparation, but I don't think it's ready yet.
