Almost everything closes around 6pm. Anything to do after that in the downtown area for a family? Any recommended walks or night views of the city?

There is a park near the museum, and if you enjoy biking, you can rent the bikes by the hour. If you do bike, the trail goes all the way to Valley Forge, where you can rest (it will take an hour or two to bike there) and see the remains. Of course, South Street is a busy venue during the evenings. Hopefully, someone in Philly will give more details.

Yes you are right that the museums and other tourist sites do close at 5 or 6. There is a tour of the historic area at night which uses projection of images on buildings and an audio narrative but I'm not sure of the specifics. Check with the visitors center when you get there. You could also take a dinner cruise on the Delaware. You could also check to see if there are any shows or performances happening when you are here. If its closer to July 4th then there will be extra events happening.

It's the Lights of Liberty Tour that you are referring to. It's a sound and light show, free for teachers, and excellent. You get tickets in the building to the right of Independence Hall. I have a tip about it on my Philly page.

On summer evenings, in Fairmount Park, you can hear the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Mann Center. There's a nice view of the city and beautiful music at a reasonable price. Rock and Popular Music concerts are held here also.
