How easy is it to get a connection in Zurich? Is it worth carrying a laptop around? Are there any or a lot of free hot spots and if so where? Downtown area that is.

There aren't a lot of 100% Free hotspots downtown Zürich but there are a couple of options:
1. Starbucks is everywhere and you can get a 30 minutes pass to surf for free there 2. Uraniastrasse (just off of Bahnhofstrasse) has an internet cafe where you can pay for time using their PCs or your own laptop. 3. There is also another decent Internet Cafe on Niederdorfstrasse right across from the McDonalds. 4. There are a lot of Captured Portal Wifi networks that will let you pay for hourly/daily/monthly passes etc. I would say bring your laptop. I always found use for it when i was wandering around downtown.
